One of the characteristic features of Shinto is that every shrine has its own calendar of festivals. In this article we shall consider the main festivals of Sumiyoshi Taisha in Osaka, one of the most ancient and famous Shinto shrine. The analysis of the Sumiyoshi Taisha calendar shows that there are several historical and cultural strata: the ancient agricultural calendar, the Chinese calendar and the Gregorian calendar, adoptedfrom Europe, as well as the unifiedfestival cycle, introduced after the Meiji Restoration.
