In this article the certainty of legislative definitions and its role in the identification of and adherence
to the spirit and letter of law are discussed from the point of view of General Legal Theory, Legal
Philosophy and Methodology. Analyzing the approaches formulated by Western legal scholarship, the
author investigates the significance of legislative definitions in the context of effective embodiment of
legislator's intent in a legislative text, as well as in the context of implementation of the principles of
legal certainty and flexibility of law and the attaining of the balance between them.
