dc.descriptionThe mid 18th century witnessed a massive change of denomination in the southeast corner of the Polish- Lithuanian Commonwealth. The Motronyn Monastery, situated in a predominantly Uniate region, became the centre of Orthodoxy; its superior Melkhizedek Znachko-Yavorsky was instructed by Gervasii, the bishop of Pereyaslav, to gain new followers. The Uniate parishes were converting to the Pereyaslav diocese of the Russian Orthodox Church; therefore, the change of denomination meant political allegiance to Russia. The reasons for changing denomination, however, were rather practical. Parish priests coming from lower strata of the society were dependent on their community who traditionally elected priests in Ukraine; on the landowner; church; and lay authorities. Priests had to balance between these parties while choosing denomination, which would let them preserve their place. In their majority, priests were born to clergymen families; they were trying to pass their parishes to future generations. The parishless priests who had received their ordination either in the left-bank Ukraine or in Wallachia were ready to occupy the parishes of the Uni- ate priests who were reluctant to convert to Orthodoxy. In such a competitive environment, priests were changing sides several times. Material reasons for conversion were the most important; and costs allocated by Russia for the propagation of Orthodoxy across the Dnieper border were an effective incentive. We do not find any theological reasons for denominational change in sources whatsoever.en_US
dc.description.abstractУ середині XVIII ст. на Наддніпрянщині відбувався доволі масовий перехід парафій з унії у православ’я. Приєднання до Переяславської єпархії давало змогу священикам отримати або утримати свою парафію. Священики залежали від громади, землевласника, світської та церковної влади і мусили між ними балансувати. Для збереження за собою парафії вони змінювали конфесію іноді кілька разів протягом свого життя. Для сільського священства матеріальні, а не теологічні мотиви були вирішальними при переході з однієї церкви до іншої. Кошти, асигновані Росією на підтримку православних за кордоном, створювали додатковий стимул для зміни конфесії.uk_UA
