Abstract
The article explores the functioning of the term the “natural boundary” (“urochyshche”) in historical
documents. Specifically, the author analyzed all the geographic objects in the Rus’ voivodeship, for which
the term of “natural boundary” (“urochyshche”) is employed in the acts and in the contemporary fiscal
documents. As a result, the author has managed to expand the meaning of the term that traditionally
presupposed a natural object, where previously some populated place (e.g. a village or a monastery) was
located. The author points out that the names of the disappeared locations were preserved in the collective
memories of the inhabitants in the surrounding settlements, and that in this way these names were transferred
to the “natural boundaries” (“urochyshe”). The article also describes how the “natural boundary”
(“urochyshe”) could look as a landscape format embracing disappeared villages, agriculture activity areas,
and newfound villages. Providing a variety of meanings for the term of “natural boundary” (“urochyshe”),
the author points out that all of them are united with the following characteristic features: clearly defined
space that was in some way acquired by the inhabitants of the local villages and (to a lesser extent) towns.
These inhabitants acquired the mentioned space in the course of their everyday life activities (as an economic
object or as a natural barrier in between the agriculturally used areas) and/or the collective memory of a
community.
