dc.descriptionA distinctive feature of modernism is the reimagining of past cultural and historical epochs and the integration of their aesthetic experiences. Ukrainian modernism, with Lesia Ukrainka as one of its leading figures, is marked by an engagement with the Baroque era – a period when Ukrainian culture developed in harmony with Western European cultural trends. Interest in the artistic legacy of the 17th and 18th centuries would later be fully realized by the Narbut Circle and subsequently by the Neoclassicists who emerged from it. However, even in early modernism, Lesia Ukrainka’s works exhibit a tendency to reinterpret Baroque culture. Romantic and realist writers had previously crafted a well-established image of the Baroque’s chronological counterpart – the Cossack era – often emphasizing its romanticized and heroic aspects. This raises the question: what elements does Lesia Ukrainka inherit from her predecessors, and how does her depiction of the Cossack past engage with the modernist discourse of high culture?en_US
