Abstract
A thesis abstract for a scientific degree of Doctor of Sciences (History), Speciality 07.00.06 - Historiography, Studies of Sources and Special Historic Disciplines. - National Taras Shevchenko University of Kyiv, Ministry of Education and Science of Ukraine. - Kyiv, 2017. The dissertation is based on a wide range of Ottoman Turkish written sources, and on Crimean-Tatar chronicles and presents the first complex study of significance and importance of their informational resources for researching in the field of History of Cossack-Hetman Ukraine of the second half of the 16th century and the first quarter of the 18th century. The methodology lying in the foundation of this scientific study provides an adequate comprehension of the studied documents. The scientific value of the information obtained from the studied written sources lies not only in fixation and chronologisation of the events and phenomena significant for the History of Ukraine, but also in evident efforts of the authors to suggest their own consideration of the events. This feature of the Turkish chronicle-writing proves its historiographic importance and demonstrates its direct connection with the History of the Cossack-Hetman Ukraine in the context of the foreign policy of the Ottoman Empire and the Crimean Khanate, and, consequently, goes in accordance with general tends of the world historic development. This fact determined the need to analyse the historical circumstances under which the corresponding written sources were created. Reliance on the ontological traditions of Ukrainian Historiography and applied modern methods of analyzing monumental sources of Ottoman Turkish origin, their attribution, providing an adequate translation of their texts into Ukrainian, comparison with data from other sources enabled to noticeably enlarge the scientific knowledge about the sources related to the History of Cossack Ukraine, its relations with High Porte and the Crimean Khanate. The dissertation presents historical and legal assessment of the official governmental documents, international agreements and treaties, as well as the comparison of their contents with the data obtained from other sources of personal origin. The synergetic approach to the selection, systematization, and classification of the Ottoman Turkish sources, scientific criticisms of the original texts made it possible to fill in a set of gaps in the sources dedicated to studying the origin of Ukrainian Cossackdom, formation of Zaporozhian Sich, the National Liberation War of Ukrainian people in the middle of the 18th century, the international recognition of Cossack-Hetman State and its increasing influence on the historical development of Europe. The performed study has manifested that the scale, contextual contents and thematic direction of the information available in Ottoman Turkish written documents have both direct and indirect relation to the History of Cossack-Hetman Ukraine, development of the Black Sea vector in its foreign policy, formation of a military and political alliance with the Ottoman Empire and the Crimean Khanate for the sake of protecting Ukrainian lands from the expansion of the Polish and Lithuanian Commonwealth and the Moscow Tsardom. There have been singled out and studied a massive of Ottoman Turkish written sources related to the personality of Hetman Bohdan Khmelnytsky as a Ruler of the Cossack State, politician and diplomat, who continued the Black-Sea orientation of the foreign political course of the Cossackdom and initiated allied relations with the Ottoman Empire and the Crimean Khanate. The dissertation also considers the evidence of the joint military campaigns of the Ukrainian Cossack Army and the Crimean-Tatar Army during the hetmanship of Petro Doroshenko focused on protecting Ukraine from occupation by foreign invaders and on strengthening its positions in the Northern Black-Sea Area. The dissertation introduces into scientific circulation a set of sources which stipulate the Black-Sea orientation of Hetman Ivan Mazepa’s policy, "the Ukrainian issue" in the geopolitical processes during the Prut War and the participation in that of the Cossack Army, and also the new stage of Turkish-Ukrainian relations during the ruling of Hetman Pylyp Orlyk. There has been identified and studied the informational potential of Ottoman Turkish sources related to geopolitical changes which occurred in the Northern Black-Sea Area and in the North-East of the Balkan Peninsula between the second half of the 16th century and the first quarter of the 18th century resulting from the creation and consolidation of Ukrainian Cossack State as a subject of international relations. Thus, the dissertation initiates a new trend in sources-studying research, it contributes to the formation of new understanding of the relations between Ukraine and Turkey, and their historical significance for the modernity.
