This paper examines academic freedom as a key condition for shaping the democratic culture of the university within the European educational area. Its significance is defined as a principle that ensures the autonomy, integrity, and accountability of universities to society. The provisions of the Magna Charta Universitatum and the Law of Ukraine “On Higher Education” are analysed with regard to the harmonization of European and national approaches to academic freedom. It is emphasized that the democratic culture of the university is built upon a combination of freedom and responsibility, ethical standards, and the active participation of the academic community in governance. It is noted that for Ukraine, the development of a culture of trust and partnership is particularly relevant as a prerequisite for effective university autonomy.en_US
