Abstract
The Chronicle of Thietmar of Merseburg (d. December 1, 1018) is an nvaluable source for the history of Rus and Kyiv in the early eleventh century. It is broadly accepted that the bishop of Merseburg composed his Chronicle between 1012 and 1018. The text survives in its original manuscript. Although Thietmar did not visit Rus himself and received mainly second-hand information, he relied on eyewitness accounts of his contemporaries. This empirically distinguishes his information from that of the Primary Chronicle of Rus, or Povest vremennykh let (hereafter, PVL), which was composed in the 1110s.
