Abstract
Th is article examines Alexander Granach’s reconstruction of his childhood in the Galician village of Verbivtsi in Th ere Goes a Mensch. Rather than reading these recollections as nostalgic autobiography, it interprets the memoir as a literary reconstruction of a bilingual and bicultural village whose linguistic, religious, and cultural environment shaped Granach’s intellectual, ethical, and artistic development. It argues that the foundations of his later humanism were established in the everyday coexistence of Jewish and Ukrainian communities long before his theatrical career in the cosmopolitan centres of Europe. Focusing on language, religion, folklore, and oral culture, the article explores how Yiddish, Ukrainian, and Hebrew functioned as complementary languages within village life, while religious traditions, vernacular devotion, and popular beliefs formed an interconnected cultural world. It shows that Granach presents identity as emerging through continual interaction across linguistic, religious, and cultural boundaries rather than through rigid separation. By highlighting the signifi cance of rural Galicia for Granach’s multilingual consciousness and artistic imagination, the article positions Th ere Goes a Mensch as an important literary testimony to the cultural history of eastern Galicia before the Holocaust and as a distinctive contribution to the study of borderland identities.
