dc.descriptionThe article examines the reaction of the Ukrainian diaspora in the United States and Canada to the celebration of the 1500th anniversary of Kyiv, which was officially celebrated in Soviet Ukraine in 1982, based on the materials of diaspora periodicals. The main positions of various political and ideological circles of the Ukrainian diaspora regarding the anniversary of Kyiv are presented and the multiplicity of receptions of the Soviet celebration is demonstrated. The celebration of the 1500th anniversary of Kyiv in the USSR for various diaspora communities was another occasion to express their position on the Ukrainian Soviet project, and it also revealed deep ideological divisions among Ukrainians abroad. Nationalist, liberal, and Sovietophile diaspora circles offered radically different receptions of the celebrations in Soviet Ukraine, based on profoundly contrasting visions of Ukraine’s past and present. The jubilee of Kyiv revealed the conflict of memories and historical metanarratives and exacerbated the problem of enmity and cooperation with the Ukrainian Soviet project, as well as Ukrainian Soviet political, public, cultural, and scientific figures. The fundamental reason for the intense and emotional reactions to the Soviet celebration, as well as attempts to organize alternative celebrations in the primordialist manner, is determined to be the sense of threatened identity and fear of appropriation by the Soviet project of “Ukrainianness,” which, according to the vast majority of diasporites, especially among the dominant nationalist circles, was possessed exclusively by the Ukrainian community in the West and its political and cultural institutions.en_US
dc.description.abstractУ статті на підставі матеріалів діаспорянської періодики досліджено реакцію української діаспори в США та Канаді на святкування 1500-річного ювілею Києва, який офіційно відзначали в радянській Україні в 1982 р. Репрезентовано основні позиції різних політико-ідеологічних кіл української діаспори щодо ювілею Києва та продемонстровано множинність рецепцій радянського святкування. Відзначення в СРСР 1500-річчя Києва стало черговим приводом для різних діаспорянських середовищ висловити свою позицію щодо українського радянського проєкту, а також виявило глибокі ідеологічні розколи серед українців за кордоном. Націоналістичні, ліберально-демократичні та радянофільські кола діаспорян пропонували кардинально відмінні рецепції урочистостей в радянській Україні, які ґрунтувались на докорінно різних візіях минулого та сучасності України. Ювілей Києва оприявнив конфлікт пам’ятей та історичних метанаративів, а також загострив проблему ворогування і співпраці з українським радянським проєктом, українськими радянськими політичними, громадськими, культурними та науковими діячами. Глибинною причиною бурхливих та емоційних реакцій на радянське святкування, а також спроб організації альтернативних святкувань у дусі примордіалізму визначено відчуття загроженості ідентичності та страху апропріації радянським проєктом «українськості», монополію на яку, на думку абсолютної більшості діаспорян, передусім панівних націоналістичних кіл, мала саме українська спільнота на Заході та її політичні та культурні інститути.uk_UA
