Abstract
This article examines the intersection of two dimensions – "middle powers" and feminized political practices of conflict resolution and sustainable peace, taking into account the cases of countries of the Global South, and especially the countries of the African continent. Data are presented on the global dimension of women’s political representation, the implementation of the agenda of UN Security Council Resolution 1325 "Women, Peace, Security", and a comparative analysis of the dynamics of women’s leadership on the European and African continents. The intersection of middle powers and WPS is studied using the examples of Colombia, Ethiopia, and Rwanda. In each of them, the following are indicated: the state of the conflict, peace initiatives, and women’s involvement; the effectiveness of specific mechanisms of women’s participation is characterized, and the factors that influenced their success are identified. The reasons for the effectiveness of the Gender Sub-Commission in the Colombian conflict are identified, the superficial and façade-like nature of changes in the political system of Ethiopia is characterized, the unique role of women in the postgenocide justice system in Rwanda, which later transformed into a high participation of women in the
country’s politics, is demonstrated. Through the analysis of three cases, it is shown that the gender dimension plays a decisive role in the transformation of modern diplomacy of middle powers of the Global South, however, the presence of women in the peacekeeping architecture is not a guarantee of sustainable peace per se. In conclusion, it is noted that middle powers are already acting as accelerators of new models of diplomacy, because they have limited resources and many challenges, and therefore compensate for this through flexibility, innovative approaches, and the search for non-standard solutions, one of which is the institutionalization of women’s participation in diplomatic practices and peacebuilding procedures.

У статті розглянуто перетин двох вимірів — середніх держав (middle powers) і фемінізованих політичних практик подолання конфліктів та забезпечення сталого миру із врахуванням кейсів країн Глобального Півдня, особливо держав Африканського континенту. Наведено дані щодо глобального виміру жіночого політичного представництва, реалізації порядку денного Резолюції Ради
Безпеки ООН 1325 "Жінки, мир, безпека" (Women, Peace and Security), здійснено порівняльний аналіз динаміки жіночого лідерства на Європейському та Африканському континентах. Досліджено кейси Колумбії, Ефіопії та Руанди. У кожному випадку зазначено стан конфлікту, мирні ініціативи, залученість жінок; охарактеризовано дієвість конкретних механізмів жіночої участі та визначено чинники, які впливали на їхню успішність. З’ясовано причини ефективності діяльності Гендерної підкомісії в колумбійському конфлікті, поверховий та фасадний характер змін у політичній системі Ефіопії, унікальну роль жінок у системі постгеноцидного правосуддя в Руанді, що згодом трансформувалося у значну участь жінок у політиці цієї країни. На підставі аналізу трьох кейсів доведено, що гендерний вимір відіграє визначальну роль у трансформації сучасної дипломатії середніх держав Глобального Півдня, проте лише присутність жінок у миротворчій архітектурі не є гарантією стійкого миру. У підсумку зазначено, що середні держави вже є прискорювачами нових моделей дипломатії, оскільки, маючи обмежені ресурси та багато викликів, компенсують це гнучкістю, інноваційними підходами та пошуком нестандартних рішень, одним із яких є інституціоналізація участі жінок у дипломатичних практиках і процедурах миробудування.
